A step by step guide to subcutaneous injection.
Step 1 — Get Ready
What you need
- Medication (vial or prefilled syringe)
- Needle & syringe (if required)
- Alcohol swabs
- Sharps container
Tip: Set everything up before you start
Step 2 — Wash Hands
- Clean hands reduce infection risk
- Soap + water or sanitiser
- Dry completely
Step 3 — Prepare Your Dose
If using a vial
- Clean the vial top
- Draw air equal to your dose
- Inject air into vial
- Turn upside down and draw medication
- Remove air bubbles
If prefilled
Step 4 — Choose Injection Site
Best areas
- Abdomen (2–5cm from belly button)
- Thigh (front upper leg)
- Upper arm (if assisted)
Reminder: Rotate sites each time
Step 5 — Clean the Area
- Use alcohol swab
- Let it dry fully
Step 6 — Inject
- Pinch the skin
- Insert needle:
- 90° (most cases)
- 45° (leaner individuals)
- Insert quickly and smoothly
Step 7 — Deliver Dose
- Push plunger slowly
- Ensure full dose is delivered
Step 8 — Remove Needle
- Remove needle at same angle
- Light pressure with swab
- Do not rub
Step 9 — Dispose Safely
- Into sharps container immediately
- Do not recap
